Re: Discovering Release

I posted elsewhere about the originality of PSB albums, I'll repeat it. Please had two singles on it that were previously released as singles in different forms, one was even reprised as a second track on the album. Disco had remixes of stuff already released, which was its point. Actually had anoth...

Re: 2015 What will it bring?.

I imagine the following in the likeliest order: 1. New album 2. Something new on the Man from the Future - DVD, tour, record, exhibition, something. 3. New promo single and/or proper single (from new album) 4. Some follow-up to the Electric tour or another cash-in/byproduct of Electric/Disco-type re...

Re: Full album shows

The PSBs have too many hits and have had too much success over a long period of time to make this a totally attractive idea... Gary Numan, for example, did this with both The Pleasure Principle and Telekon a few years ago... in one instance the breakout album with the big hit and the other the recor...

Re: "Sound On Sound" feature on "It's A Sin"

One thing mentioned in the article is that Actually is the second PSB album to have entirely new material. That's an interesting statement to talk about, and it's not entirely true. Please featured two singles that were previously released as singles -- West End girls and Opportunities. Actually had...

Re: Premiere of 'A Man From The Future' at BBC Proms - 23/07

I think it is kind of incredible-- and very Pet Shop Boys for some reason -- that a mathematician writes an academic book years ago and ends up with a writing credit to a song. Now academic press volumes can be "sampled," but only by electronic musicians who read them; I have this image of...

Four-on-the-floor Apocalypse

I had mentioned a while ago that I was writing an essay for an academic book on the PSB. The book is now published as a hardcover (expensive) book. My understanding is that it will eventually be offered as a paperback, but at least it's now out. My essay is chapter 10. The Counter-Narratives of Radi...

Re: Would you read a book about Very?

I am sorry that the proposal didn't go through, but I speak from my own experience that this is a learning process and I appreciate your positive attitude.

The piece I was working on before is slated to be published pretty soon (in the next month), I'll announce it when it gets closer.

Re: Diamond version

Really didn't expect an Easter song from Neil when I went to check the forum today. This song is a bit embarrassing. Why did he agree to do it? Given the amount of homophobia associated with Christianity it seems odd to me. Nice as a little oddity though. "Were You There?" is a deeply Ame...

Re: Have they lost their touch?

I was thinking about this question over the past week, listening to the albums. My take is that what made the Boys' earlier records, and what makes Actually such a special record, is that there is a tension between conventional pop tropes with unconventional themes and unusual ways of challenging th...

Re: Would you read a book about Very?

The thing is when you get lyrics permissions usually they want to see the absolute final draft in the entire context, and something like 2 pages before and 2 pages after any quotes. You can't do that until it's finished. And at that point, you either completely rewrite if the answer is no, or you pa...

Re: Would you read a book about Very?

As to whomever said Celine Dion sticks out, it's actually that book in the series that is hailed as the really brilliant contribution of the series. Not so much because it's Celine Dion but because of the quality of the criticism. I haven't read that one, so I can't speak for myself, but that is the...

Re: Pet Shop Boys performing at Coachella USA in April 2014

Wow, that's kind of a big deal. What they will need to do is have a US promo release or something to build momentum around this. I remember a few years ago, Gary Numan was to perform, and it was cancelled because of travel being halted because of the volcano in Iceland, but even just being on the bi...
