Re: The Tonight Show Walk-Off

I seem to remember in PSB vs. America that Chris (I don't remember about Neil) had no idea who Jay Leno was and did not know how culturally significant The Tonight Show is, and this is probably at the point of the last gasp of the Tonight Show being as important as it was during the Carson years. Ne...

The Tonight Show Walk-Off

I happened to watch the infamous Tonight Show walk-off this morning. Not only is the whole thing dreadful, but unfortunate, and the interview after the performance is just terrible. Neil is out of his element; Leno has no idea who he is talking to, but he is actually making some ok conversation that...

Re: Symposium on PSB, Serious academic articles needed.

I sent a note to one of the organizers and received an automated response that I wouldn't hear back for a little while.

The timing of this is also not so great for me--my full time job is as clergy, and the symposium is the end of Holy Week.

Re: Symposium on PSB, Serious academic articles needed.

Would they consider skyped in presentations? My academic institution's travel budget limitations would not make this possible for me. But I would love to participate....

Re: I'm with stupid revisited

Thanks for the discussion. My opinion is that any first single off of fundamental would have gone top 10 just by virtue of the fans picking up whatever was being put out there before the album release. Minimal is my favorite song off of the album, probably not the best choice for first single, eithe...

I'm with stupid revisited

I happened to watch, a little by accident, a live performance of "I'm with Stupid" in YouTube, it's the first time I actually sat through the song since perhaps the first or second listen. I really did not care for the song when it came out, and thought it was a terrible choice as a first ...

Re: Would you read a book about Very?

Cool, congrats! Zero Books was a great imprint; they still are, but Repeater is a cool press.

I am curious how the permissions worked out with this, as we talked about this before here.

Re: 20 Years of "Paninaro '95"

What do you all think led to its one-week increase? A weak release week? The impending release of Alternative, which would not have its lead "single"? I will have to get those CDs out again and have a listen. When it came out, it was exciting that it got a legitimate US release of two disc...

My 8 year old loves Thursday, One More Chance, and What Have I done to Deserve This? He dislikes most of Yes.

Re: Pet Shop Boys - Christmas

I think it's one of their worst releases. It Doesn't Always... is tacky and the production is was dated already when it came out, All Over The World is inferior to the album versions, the cover of Viva La Vida is an uninspired cover of a great pop song and My Girl is not that special either. A real...

Winner on US Radio?

I have been traveling a little in the last week or so, and I heard "Winner" three times on the radio, twice in the car while driving and once in a resturaunt (a Subway), and I'm not sure if it was a resturaunt playlist or a local station. In every case it was on a contemporary hits station...

Re: Bring back Sylvia!

I like Sylvia, and I think she brought something cool to the live shows. The last few records, though, didn't really miss her. I think it would be cool to bring her back in a new way. IMO her best moments were on For Your Own Good and Live For Today, the latter I think is really stunning.

Re: Analyze Always on my mind

As written in 'Yeah, Yeah, Yeah': PSB covers serve a purpose. Go West, he writes, is a coming out song, Streets is a deconstruction, Somewhere promoted a concert, but Always on my Mind is for the sheer joy of the song itself. Never thought of it that way, but I think this is true. It just 'is' in a ...

As someone in the comment section said: Best PSB cover since Liza Minnelli. Truth.
