Re: 4th single off Hotspot - I Don't Wanna

I'm baffled by the radio edit. Would it really be any less likely to be played on radio at 4 minutes long, compared to the chopped version? The edit makes an abrupt switch from the truncated intro into the beat--it sounds amateurish. The "Monkey Business" and "Burning the Heather" edits made sense. ...

Re: Wedding in Berlin: revival of interest?

I was thinking it should have been a b-side, but then it occurred to me that for sales reasons it made sense to include it on the album: there will be some demand for the song at weddings, and by associating the song with the album, they might sell a few more albums. It’s more helpful than it would ...

Re: Obsessed with anything unreleased?

“Love your enemy,” which has never leaked, sounded enticing from its description in Literally: “gorgeous strings” and apparently a Massive Attack vibe. I’d love for the Bobby O demos / album prototype to get a proper release. And in addition to the Bobby O demo of “In the club or in the queue,” ther...

That “So Hard” sample...

I never realized that the opening “It’s” sample of “So Hard” isn’t an “It’s” at all—it’s “kiss” and comes from a rather famous bit of a not-so-famous ABC song, the “Kiss my snatch” line in “A to Z,” https://www.whosampled.com/sample/251763/Pet-Shop-Boys-So-Hard-ABC-A-to-Z/ I must be the last to figu...

Re: Original track listing for “Disco One” from EMI America

It looks fake, but the seller also has a 1986 promo sheet for a Skinny Puppy release on EMI America sister label Capitol Records. That release has a staple hole the same place as the PSB release. So... could be real. It’s an odd thing to fake. The typos and grammatical errors in the release, as well...

Re: How many records do you guess PSB has sold in their career?

Thanks for posting the RIAA link, Nickname. It suggests that all their best-selling albums together sold 3-5 million total in the US. The UK and German markets are smaller, but have been friendlier to PSB—might they each have contributed a similar or greater number? And perhaps the rest of the world...

Re: "West" is the key to success

Back in the day, the theory was that they recorded “Somewhere” because the West Side Story connection would give them a surefire “West” hit. Not very plausible, I admit, but they did seem to be getting desperate.

Re: Strange feeling...

I listened to Elysium on my commute to work last week, and I found myself liking “Winner” for the first time. What occurred to me is that the music is pretty good and it might have been a hit if some other band had sung it, or it would have been a better PSB song if Neil had written more characteris...

Re: Cardi B tells guest he looks a Pet Shop Boy

The Boys’ classic look circa West End Girls is fairly well remembered in the U.S. and gets referenced on TV every few years. Saturday Night Live has done so, and so did Mystery Science Theater 2000 in the ‘90s. The West End girls video is considered iconic by anyone who knows music-video history, wh...

Re: Festival concerts saved PSB's career and give them a Pop Legends status

Yes, and they played their first festival, Roskilde, only because they needed money to balance out the Savoy shows. They seem to have enjoyed festivals more than they expected to, and they must have realized that the money would make it possible to keep doing whatever else they wanted to do. The bri...

Re: Why do people hate “Before”?

Chris loves the track, and he’s right to do so. I think he’s said there’s not an ounce of fat on it, or words to that effect, and it’s true. It’s sleek and sounds like nothing else in the PSB canon: very ‘90s New York in a way that should have been a stateside hit. (Though U.S. Radio was a lost caus...

Re: Two Andy Richards Interviews

Yeah, there have been other interviews that have mentioned Chris sometimes doesn't play much: the keyboards on "Before," for example, including the riff, are played by Peter Daou, if I recall. Chris is a writer and executive producer of sorts most of all, I'd say. He writes songs and guides their so...

Re: Reunion

Home recording has also made it easier to produce good quality demos inexpensively. In addition to that, the Boys were just writing a ton of material for the musical and for various non-LP projects. They evidently not only demoed but studio-recorded more songs than we'd known about for PopArt. "Reun...

Re: The boys just arrived to Israel

Neil doesn't seem arrogant or in bad form to me, he's simply fielding some awkward questions. Considering that these are journalists, not fans, it's to be expected they mostly ask very elementary and somewhat ill-informed questions. That's how it goes; it's the nature of these things, especially whe...
