Re: 3rd single "Monkey Business" (Jan 2020)

“Entered by the backdoor, straight into the bar, checking out the dance floor, well I like who you are”

Good to see Neil’s not lost the art of the unsubtle euphemism.

Re: Back catalogue countdown to Hotspot

Yes is my favourite post-imperial album. I think it’s their most consistent. It’s got a great positive feel; shiny production. All over the world is exquisite - it should have been a proper single in its own right. The verses remind me of Bowie. Vulnerable is an under appreciated gem. King of Rome i...

Re: Back catalogue countdown to Hotspot

It's funny you should mention Disco 5, because I have it on very good authority that I'd like them to release it. [emoji2] I reckon it’ll be a fast follower to Hotspot - a mix of their favourite remixes of singles and tracks from the Price trilogy, plus a handful of new tracks. They should re-relea...

Re: Back catalogue countdown to Hotspot

Just as soon as we thought we’d got to grips with the evolving concept that is the Disco series, along came Disco Four (notably not Disco 4) to confound us again, featuring their choice remixes for other artists, along with their own reworkings of Integral and I’m with Stupid. I’m pretty sure this w...

Re: Back catalogue countdown to Hotspot

Fundamentalism’s choice of remixers suggests Neil was chief curator, featuring a number of lesser-known and up-and-coming European techno producers flexing their muscles. The results are mixed. Fugitive still sounds monstrous here. Melnyk’s electro take on I’m with stupid is great fun. Lobe’s spaced...

It's kinda cute in a retro kind of way. Even for 1998 it's retro - not sure if deliberately though?
Yes, his Les Rythmes Digitales project was purposefully retro, drawing on the early 80s.

Re: Hotspot reviews

I agree, the Record Collector one is a nice piece of writing. Word count restrictions mean you’re never going to get a track-by-track account.

Re: Back catalogue countdown to Hotspot

These Further Listenings are taking longer to get through than I’d anticipated - I’d forgotten about the double discs [emoji846] I’ll keep this simple - there are some great tracks on here: Fugitive, of course, which yes, should have been on the album. The resurrectionist is an A plus b-side, with G...

Re: Hotspot reviews

That comment the reviewer made about it sounds like they are using the same instruments as they did way back in the day.....while I wouldn't like it, I sometimes wondered what would be the results if you told the PSB when they recorded the next album, they could only use the same equipment they use...

Disco. wrote:I find Fundamental quite boring, unfortunately. Fugitive should have been on the album. Easily the best track from this era.
It’s arguably not as exciting as a whole album from the makers of Left to my own devices could have been.

Re: Back catalogue countdown to Hotspot

It feels like a lot of thought and work went into Fundamental. I remember Neil and Chris saying at the time of release that they had to push Trevor hard to make it sound “more Trevor”. It was exciting to speak to the man himself a few years ago to interview him for this forum. I kind of think of the...

Re: Back catalogue countdown to Hotspot

I find Battleship Potemkin quite cold and basic compared to The Most Incredible Thing and A Man from the Future. I guess that will have been the sound they were aiming for but I do prefer the comparative lushness of the second two. I’m never quite sure how the two songs and vocal snatches fit in eit...

Re: Back catalogue countdown to Hotspot

Disco 3 was released the day I flew out on honeymoon and naturally I grabbed a copy at the airport. The inclusion of five new tracks here blew the Disco concept wide open. Try it, If looks could kill and Somebody else’s business are all excellent. They work well alongside the five remixes, which are...

Re: Back catalogue countdown to Hotspot

Release Further Listening shows just what a prolific time this was for them. The guitar focus of Release is largely absent here but they could have easily carved out an entirely different album from these sessions. Loads here to love including some of my favourite b-sides - Always, Sexy Northerner, ...

Re: Hotspot reviews

However I think it's unfortunate and unfair for a reviewer to say what they said here. If you didnt know much about PSB that's the sort of comment that can make the difference between a person buying the record or giving it a miss. What happened to letting the music speak for itself? The review is ...
