Love etc drops to 27 in UK - did EMI see this coming?

I wonder if Did You See Me Coming has been chosen as the next single because it is more commercial than All Over the World, and boy do they need a top tenner now that Love Etc tumbled from 14 to 27.

Did you see the 80s coming?

It's certainly back to the future with Yes.

The first single is in 6/8 time (just like Can You Forgive Her from Very).

And 'Did You See Me Coming?', sounds curiously like Living By Numbers by New Musik. Compare at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5j30b0yuXk

New video influenced by Desireless 'Qui Sommes Nous'

If you want to see some of the ideas in the Love Etc. video in a less animated form, rewind 20 years to Desireless 'Qui Sommes Nous' - you can watch it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5pg9_BCiFo. Desireless was the French act that had a massive hit in 1987 with 'Voyage Voyage' (the PWL remix gave...

Battleship Potemkin in Liverpool?

The strong association between Liverpool and socialist history, combined with the fact that Liverpool is European Capital of Culture 2008, should make the Cammell Laird shipyard, on the other side of the Mersey, a really appropriate place for PSB to perform Potemkin. Why have they not seen this oppo...

Disconsolate

I love the word 'disconsolate' because it fuses the idea of desparate sadness with dancing.

A red letter day mixes contain vocal played backwards

There is some vocal on the autoerotic decapitation mixes of A red letter day which sounds like it is played backwards - sounds a bit Dutch, like someone saying 'Ooflejjitt'.

Does anyone know what is being sung?

Anyone remember Desireless?

I heard 'Voyage Voyage' the other day for the first time in ages and remembered what a great voice Desireless had. The look has changed in 20 years but you can see Desireless lip-synching to the PWL remix at the Wianki festival in Krakow on http://youtube.com/watch?v=8T08J4UHMtk and then I got the a...

Pet Shop Boys in Management Today

Page 49 of August 2007's edition of Management Today contains a graphic of Neil and Chris attending an audience with Edward de Bono and comments 'Everyone, it seems, has gratefully drunk from De Bono's overflowing intellectual well. Elephant in the room

Everywhere I go, people are talking and writing about elephants in rooms. Pick up any copy of a British quality newspaper and you will find the phrase. Guaranteed. It seems to have gained new currency. But a year ago, I had never seen it at all. Can the current popularity of this phrase be directly ...

I thought it was odd that Numb's covers were identical, which made it a bit confusing the way Amazon portrayed them (one of them was blank and had an incorrect tracklisting).

The Numb thing is a real shame as I was beginning to like at least the album version and I think the video is superb.

Why isn't Fundamental pushed on the Numb packaging?

Maybe there are very obvious answers to this and I'm about the get 'you bloody idiot, don't you realise that ...'-type responses, BUT: If one aim of releasing singles like Numb, which seem to have a wider appeal than say, Minimal, is to stimulate sales of Fundamental, then why isn't Fundamental ment...

New passport style makes Integral a must as single #4

New UK passports now contain biometric bits and chips as we move inexorably toward the fulfilment of the ID project. Before Blair resigns, PSB must release this as a single - with the ID-card-type covers already suggested by other correspondents. The accompanying news story may even propel sales, es...

Dumb is smart, but the radio mix of Numb is stoopid

I've just heard the radio mix of Numb and they seem to have cut the orchestral intro and the second verse completely. Thereby ruining the unity of the song. About 15 years ago, they'd be doing extended mixes, now it's about dumbing, or is that numbing down, to increase the Radio 2 playlist rating. I...

I absolutely agree with Actually - A red letter day is best in its album version and for me is the standout on Bilingual. It's one of three songs I have requested to be played at my funeral - that's how much I like it. The 'you might sneer' stuff does very marginally detract from it, but the intro, ...
