Re: Paninaro Magazine

Didn't the Pets sponsor a Scottish Sunday morning football team back in the days of Cicero?

Re: Discovery 1994 - DVD/CD-Release

Watching that One in a Million/Mr. Vain clip, a lot of energy there. A nice remix of One in a Million might have made a nice (6th) single from Very. I always forget how damn catchy that song is. It was seriously mooted as a collaboration with Take That. At the time, it would almost certainly have b...

Re: Recording of DJ Culture and Was It Worth It?

Going back to DJ Culture and Was it worth it?, I loved the presentation of these singles - the videos for both were great in their differing ways. The playfulness of the DJ Culture video contrasted to its relatively serious subject matter and was a counterbalace to the rather po-faced miserablism of...

Re: Recording of DJ Culture and Was It Worth It?

But to play the revisionism game [emoji4]: How can you expect to be taken seriously? was for me one of the few obvious single choices from Behaviour. But the BiR remix moved the sound in an odd direction, away from single material and more towards the sound of Behaviour. If they were looking for a ...

Re: Recording of DJ Culture and Was It Worth It?

I like both singles - a lot. They suffer a little because they signify the end of the greatest collection of singles in pop history. Indeed, I'd argue that Jealousy suffers from the same fate, as, to a lesser extent, does Where the streets have no name/Can't take my eyes off of you. The bubble popp...

I was in deep cover When you bowled me over Like a maiden where I'm out for a duck Now I feel like an extra In your old Opel Vectra As it's clear that I'm right out of luck CHORUS: You're quite the catch You've changed my life But now you're off on tour I'm hit for six A cricket wife Abandoned and u...

Re: Pet Shop Boys remix Paul Weller

Who is Paul Weller? Legendary leader of The Jam and the Style Council. The Eton Rifles, Going Underground, That's Entertainment, and Town Called Malice were among their biggest hits - they had four number ones and were as big a cult band as there has been, really. Then Weller left for the Style Cou...

Re: Recording of DJ Culture and Was It Worth It?

Elements of Was it worth it? were composed years earlier. DJ Culture, if I recall correctly, was composed on their US tour in 1991. It was an attempted rewrite of West End girls.

"A dramatic new song." Ooh. If it's as good as it sounds, I can see myself doing a full toss on release.

Re: PSB vs Daft Punk

I've enjoyed Daft Punk over the years - from Da Funk and Around the World to Get Lucky and their collabs with the Weeknd. Their best stuff always had that element of excitement. Their Tron soundtrack was great, too. Their image was massively contrived though, fairly unoriginal, and pandered to the r...

Re: Hotspot: 1 year old today

I love the joy and abandon of Monkey business. It's playful PSB, has a killer snythline, and hides a gloriously downbeat and melancholic comedown late in the mix that works as a metaphor for a regrettable hangover. Burning the heather is undoubtedly a very good song. But let's face it, it lacks exci...

Re: Hotspot: 1 year old today

As I was strolling through Prenzlauer Berg on a lovely spring Berlin day today, it crossed my mind that they are one of the few bands who have hits without having hits. What I mean by that is they have reached a point in their career where commercial hits are impossible (for so many reasons which al...

Re: Hotspot: 1 year old today

If there's one positive thing about enduring a lockdown in a pandemic, it's the opportunity to luxuriate in an album, give it time, and let it breathe rather than treating it as you might a disposable face mask. In a world of instant gratification, there's something to be said for putting a record o...
